Glass light guides are the best for transporting infrared and also visible spectrum of light. When used with halogen or metal halide light sources, they give out very high intensity light. They find excellent applications for industrial and medical illumnation.
Due to the low mass of the fibers, Glass fibers can withstand high levels of shock and vibration. They are alos immune to extreme electrical noise. Typically a glass fiber optic light guide is assembled with hundreds of small diameter such as 50 MM glass fibers. They are protected across the length with protective shealthing like stainless stell flexible pipe, silicon rubber sleeving, PVC, teflon sleeves and very often a combination of two or more shealthings. The ends are optically polished with sophisticated machines to achieve highest light reflection.
Tehe two types of glass fiber bundles include coherent(to transmit image) and non-coherent or randomized which transmit light and not image. Epsilon manufactures lightguides from randomized fibers.
